30 percent of hip replacements use “metal-on-metal” products

Posted on June 10th, 2011 No Comments

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, every year, over 250,000 hip replacement surgeries are performed in the United States.  30 percent of these surgeries involve “metal-on-metal” hip replacements.

In “metal-on-metal” hip replacements, the lining of the ball and the socket of the hip are composed of a cobalt chromium alloy.  Hip replacements that are not considered “metal-on-metal” use plastics or ceramics instead of metal.

Research has shown that in “metal-on-metal” replacements, metallics from the product can be released into the blood stream, damage tissue around the hip, and eventually loosen the implant.  Patients that have had problems with their “metal-on-metal” implants say they experienced debilitating pain.

If you or someone you love has experienced complications after having a DePuy hip replacement, contact the DePuy hip implant defect lawyers of Williams Hart at 800-761-3187 and set up an appointment to discuss your situation with one of our experienced attorneys.
