Baby boomers cause increase in hip replacement surgeries

Posted on June 6th, 2011 No Comments

As the Baby boomer generation gets older, doctors and hospitals have experienced an increase in hip replacement surgeries and knee replacement surgeries.

Over the past 10 years, knee replacement surgeries have doubled for all age groups and tripled among 45 to 64-year olds, and hip replacement surgeries have had similar increases.

Researchers say that for baby boomers getting hip and knee replacements, they are unsure of exactly how active an individual can be and how long the replacement will last.  Originally, hip replacements and knee replacements were focused on older patients with lower levels of physical activity.

New research shows that besides the common problems associated with hip and knee replacements (infection, blood clots, anesthesia complications), younger hip and knee replacement patients risk problems associated with wearing out the replacement.
