FDA approves ceramic-on-metal hip replacement

Posted on June 16th, 2011 No Comments

This week, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration gave approval of the first ceramic-on-metal hip replacement.  The device was made by Johnson and Johnson’s DePuy Orthopaedics.

This hip replacement is the first product that features a metal socket and ceramic ball.  The hip replacement gives patients with osteoarthritis and in need of a hip replacement a new option.  Other types of replacements include a variety of combinations of metal, ceramic, and plastic parts.  However, there is no other product with the same ceramic ball-metal socket combination.

As a condition of the FDA’s approval, DePuy Orthopaedics must investigate the product’s effect on patients and measure levels of metal ions in patients’ blood.

If you or someone you love has experienced pain or other complications after having a defective metal-on-metal DePuy ASR hip replacement, contact the DePuy hip recall lawyers of Williams Hart at 800-761-3187 to discuss your case.
