Metal hip replacement patients more likely to need revision surgeries

Posted on September 26th, 2011 No Comments

A recent report from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales says that patients with metal hip replacements, like the DePuy ASR hip implant, are more likely to need hip replacement revision surgeries within 7 years after their initial surgery than patients with plastic hip replacements.

Researchers found that about 14 percent of patients with metal hip replacements have their replacement removed or replaced within 7 years after getting the replacement.  In contrast, only about 3 percent of hip replacement patients with plastic implants have had their implant replaced or removed within 7 years.

In 2006, about 15 percent of patients going in for hip replacement surgeries received metal hip implants.  Today, only about 5 percent of patients receive metal hip replacements in hip implant surgeries.
