Total hip replacement product options

Posted on June 23rd, 2011 No Comments

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists four types of approved total hip replacement products on their website.  The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons estimates that by 2030 a total of 500,000 hip replacement surgeries will be needed every year.  For this reason, it is important that potential hip surgery patients are aware of their options concerning total hip replacements.

The four types of approved hip replacements are:

Ceramic-on-ceramic: These hip replacements feature both a ball and socket made of ceramic.

Ceramic-on-polyethylene: These products have a ceramic ball and a plastic or plastic-lined socket.

Metal-on-polyethylene:  Metal-on-polyethylene hip replacements have metal ball and a plastic or plastic-lined socket.

Metal-on-metal:  These hip replacements consist of a metal ball and metal socket.  The recalled DePuy ASR hip replacement is a metal-on-metal product.

Experts warn prospective hip surgery patients, especially those getting a second replacement, of metal-on-metal replacements like the DePuy ASR because they release cobalt and chromium ions into the blood stream which cause heath complications like pseudo-tumors and metallosis.  In addition, many metal-on-metal products have been found to have unacceptably high failure rates.
