Total hip replacement vs. hemiarthoplasty

Posted on December 7th, 2011 No Comments

There are two different types of hip replacement surgeries available to individuals seeking relief from hip joint pain.

The first is a total hip replacement.  On the one hand, total hip replacements replace a larger area of the hip, including the hip’s femoral head and socket.  Individuals most likely to need a total hip replacement include people over the age of 55-years old and people who have experienced hip dislocation, hip fracture, or osteoarthritis.

On the other hand, hemiarthoplasty replaces a smaller portion of the hip and is considered a partial hip replacement.  In these surgeries, the hip’s femoral head, but not the socket, is replaced.  People who are active and under the age of 55-years old are more likely to have this kind of hip replacement.
