What is metallosis?

Posted on July 9th, 2012 No Comments

Metallosis is a condition that occurs when flakes of metal embed into a person’s soft tissue. This potentially dangerous health issue has been linked to metal hip replacement systems because the contact between the hip implant components can cause the metal to chip and flake, allowing it to lodge within a person’s soft tissue.

This type of metal-on-metal system, including DePuy’s ASR hip replacement system, was originally thought to be a breakthrough in medical technology because it was considered a more durable implant. However, this has proved incorrect, and thousands of these DePuy ASR systems have been recalled due to health dangers such as metallosis.

Metallosis is different than metal poisoning because it is not the toxicity of the metal that causes health problems but rather inflammation resulting from the embedded metal flakes. If a person receives a metal hip implant and then suffers from metallosis, he or she may experience nerve and soft tissue damage as a result.

If you or a loved one has experienced any type of metal poisoning after undergoing a metal hip replacement surgery, contact the DePuy hip replacement lawyers of Williams Hart today by calling 800-761-3187.
