3-year delay between signs of defects and recall in Australia

Posted on October 3rd, 2011 No Comments

According to members of the Australian Senate, a 3-year delay occurred between the time the nation’s Therapeutic Goods Administration noticed the defects of DePuy’s ASR hip implants and the time Johnson & Johnson issued a recall of their product in Australia.

Australian and British officials were the first to notice that DePuy’s metal-on-metal hip implant had a high failure rate because of their use of artificial joint replacement registries. ¬†The Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia reportedly noticed defects in the hip implant in 2006. ¬†However, the product was not recalled from the Australian market until late 2009.

Johnson & Johnson officials did not give members of the Senate any indication of why the recall was so delayed.
