CTAF releases new metal-on-metal hip implant study

Posted on November 7th, 2011 No Comments

The California Technology Assessment Forum recently released a new study on mental-on-metal hip implants.  The new study argues that all-metal hip implants are less effective than traditional hip replacements, contrary to a previous study from the organization which supported the advantages of a metal-on-metal hip implant like the DePuy ASR hip replacement.

According to the study, the two main defects of metal-on-metal implants are early device failure and the release of metal ions into the bloodstream.  Researchers used 5 criteria to determine the safety of hip implants.  Metal-on-metal devices only met 2 out of the 5 criteria.

Metal-on-metal hip replacements were determined to not improve net-health, not be as beneficial as alternatives, and not induce improvement outside of device trials.  The study concluded, “There is clearly no evidence that the potential benefits [of metal-on-metal hip implants] outweight the potential risks.”

If your DePuy hip implant experienced early device failure, contact the DePuy hip implant defect lawyers of Williams Hart at 800-761-3187 to speak with one of our attorneys today.
