According to a new report by the Food and Drug Administration, the administration received more complaints concerning metal-on-metal hip replacements in the first six months of 2011 than in the past four years combined.
The implant failures aren’t just a national problem either; the English and Welsh National Joint Registry has reported that one in three ASR hip systems that were implanted in patients six years ago have failed.
The FDA is currently investigating the rates of hip replacement revision surgery and the risk-benefit profile of more than 20 manufacturers. The review will include metal-on-metal, plastic, and ceramic implants.
