Federal health officials investigate metal hip replacements

Posted on July 2nd, 2012 No Comments

Officials with the Food and Drug Administration are going to begin an investigation into metal hip replacements that have been failing in American patients for some time and U.S. health officials want to know the exact reason why.

Beginning last week, the FDA had a two-day meeting that discussed the safety of this type of hip replacement after so many patients claimed that their implants caused pain, swelling, and even second or removal surgeries.

This type of implant was originally thought to be the safer option, but after these reports, it may be the most dangerous kind. The metal implants were thought to be more resistant than the plastic or ceramic ones that were previously used, but recent data may prove this to be false.
