Study says hormone therapy lowers risk of hip fracture in women

Posted on November 28th, 2011 No Comments

New research suggests that women on hormone therapy have a lower risk of suffering a hip fracture.  Conversely, women who have been on hormone therapy but stop taking it have an increased risk of hip fracture.

The study was conducted by Women’s Health Initiative. ¬†Researchers concluded that hormone therapy decreases the risk of hip, spine, and wrist fractures in women by between 27 and 35 percent.

Records from more than 80,000 women were analyzed in the study.  Statistics showed that women who stopped taking hormone therapy were 55 percent more likely to experience a hip fracture than women who continued hormone therapy.

The risk of hip fracture in women who discontinued hormone therapy increased 2 years after they stopped the therapy and the risk increased over following years.
